Journey from Kathmandu to Machha Khola – The Beginning of Your Trek
Today marks the start of your trekking adventure as you leave Kathmandu and embark on a scenic drive to Machha Khola. The journey offers stunning landscapes, diverse villages, and glimpses of the Himalayan foothills.
Scenic Drive Through Changing Landscapes
- The drive begins as you exit Kathmandu Valley, heading towards Dhading Besi.
- The road conditions can be challenging in some areas due to ongoing construction, adding to the adventure.
- Continuing northwest, you will reach Arughat, a charming village nestled along the Budhi Gandaki River.
Passing Through Picturesque Villages
- From Arughat, the route winds through rural villages as you proceed to Sotikhola, where gravel roads test your adventurous spirit.

Covering a distance of approximately 8-10 km in 3-4 hours, the trail involves a moderate ascent with breathtaking landscapes and tranquil surroundings.

The journey is not overly long but involves a descent through beautiful landscapes and cultural sites. The trail takes you down towards Chhekampar and past small settlements. You will descend through picturesque landscapes, with fields, meadows, and the occasional prayer wheel or stone structure marking the way.
After several hours of descending, you’ll arrive at Rachen Gompa, a significant monastery located in a peaceful, secluded area surrounded by hills and forests. This monastery is also a center for Tibetan Buddhist practice in the Tsum Valley.
Rachen Gompa is an important site for the local people, and like Mu Gompa, it’s home to several monks and nuns. The surrounding area offers incredible views of the mountains and is known for its serenity.
